Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect launch
We were all looking forward to the launches of Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect. If you are not sure what they are, basically they are along the lines of OpenID but instead of lots of OpenID providers you just have Facebook and Google. Plus you have access to the users data from that site.
It allows you to sign into a website using credentials from these two sites. The chances are that you will have an account with either of these services. MySpace is also in the mix so if you are not with Google or Facebook you probably have a MySpace account.
So earlier today Google announced that Google Friend Connect was open to the public. Have a look at their help documentation and see how to implement it.
But less than an hour after Google opened the gates, Facebook announced the general availability of Facebook Connect. Have a look at their Facebook Connect pages. Do you think they planned this? Did they each have inside information and launch at the same time? Let me know if you have any idea.
So now the big 3 want to solidify themselves as THE dominant force in the internet identity space. Who do you think it will be? Who do you think it should be? I really think it should be Google. Why? Because they do a lot more than just social networking, they have so many applications you can use and they are spread out over the web a lot more than Facebook or MySpace.
